Cabinetry | Santa Barbara Green Contractor

Regarding cabinetry, LUA, Inc., a Santa Barbara Green Contractor, and our preferred subcontractors can offer Green Building solutions. We suggest the use of materials that are certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), an organization that promotes responsible forest resource management. Also, materials that do not contain added chemicals including formaldehyde.

"Green Built" cabinets can be manufactured using a variety of eco-friendly materials such as; superior core products like M3-grade particle board which is FSC and pre-finished with zero emission of UV acrylic durable surfaces, Agrifiber (a fiberboard) can be used which is made of annually renewable wheat straw and using a formaldehyde-free resin that can be overlaid with a veneer.

Cabinets can be accompanied with eco-friendly countertops such as Richlite which is made primarily of paper purchased from FSC-Certified sources and/or recycled paper.

Story Poles | Hope Ranch Property

Story poles were erected on this Hope Ranch Property.

The construction of story poles is often required by the local planning and design review boards in order to get a better idea of the size and scale of a project. LUA coordinates surveying, construction, certification, and presentation of all documentation to the owner, design team, and design review board members.

As you can see there is a often a considerable amount of lumber required for the construction of story poles. We encourage our clients to contribute this and other used or un-needed materials to Habitat For Humanity http://www.sbhabitat.org/, a non-profit organization that is committed to the re-use of building materials and to providing homes to low income families.

A common question our clients ask... "do we really need heating and air conditioning?"

Depending on your individual needs regarding preferred temperatures in the home and the involvement of other heating systems such as radiant floor heating, an HVAC (Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning) may or may not be desired. If desired, we recommend HVAC systems that are rated "high-efficiency" (13 SEER, 90% AFUE) and computer calculated "right-sized" equipment based on the design, construction and orientation of the residence. If the equipment is not sized properly, you may be purchasing a system that will not run sufficiently. For example, if the system is "too large" it will likely be noisier and it will not stay on long enough per cycle to run efficiently. With the above in mind, we implement services to insure that the system is designed specifically for the home and needs of the client. Also, that the systems are pressure tested to ensure minimal leakage, appropriate filters are in place which will promote equipment longevity and improve indoor air quality for the occupants.

Energy Monitoring
There are software and meter reading devices available that will help you monitor how much energy your appliances use. There are even software tools such as Google's New PowerMeter and an iPhone app.

Federal Tax Credit for Energy Efficiency
Many of our clients are taking advantage of federal and state credits for installing energy efficient items such as solar panels and water heaters.

Lighting
When building a custom home, aesthetically speaking, we understand that lighting can "make or break" the home. You can expect savings by switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs or CFLs. Many of our clients are enjoying the efficiency and longevity of LED lighting.

Appliances
In most homes, the two most "power usage" items are refrigerators and washing/dryer machines. Refrigerators can be adjusted or programmed correctly allowing them to run more efficiently.

The above items are only a few among the many ways to save energy while reducing your energy bills. During the pre-construction phase of the project, such energy efficient items will be examined, reviewed and integrated into the new home.
